Not Protecting the Right of Homosexual Marriage Endangers...

Not Protecting the Right of Homosexual Marriage Endangers the Rights of Others Civil marriage is enjoyed by all people in society; all people that is, excluding the ones that find love in the form of their own gender. These people are being denied the basic right of engaging in legally bound matrimony. Laws, such as this one, have been created time and time again, mostly by ignorant bigots, only to be dissolved when finally seen as immoral and unjust in the eyes of someone without hatred in their heart. It should be considered a crime in itself to deny access to an institution that has no one true concrete definition; but instead much diversity, which America has depended on and built from for over a 1000 years. There are at least†¦show more content†¦And while this is the most applied law, it stands still unclear. The bible calls homosexuality an abolishment, but also says, Let us therefore no longer pass judgment on one another, but resolve#8230;nothing is unclean in itself; but unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean (Romans 14:13-13). Also, wh en Americans were told that they would have freedom of religion, does not that sanctify freedom from religion as well? People wanting to engage in same sex marriage are not asking for all religions to accept their vows. They ask merely for tolerance and the ability to recite them so that they mean something, legally. They ask for simple civil equality in the pursuit of happiness (Jefferson 200) among themselves, the United States citizens. A dispute that frequently appears in court over same-sex marriage is the question of what marriage is in its self. Marriages exist in many forms that cannot fit into a universal mold. There are relationships consisting of one man and numerous women called polygamy. Relationships with one woman and many men called polyandry(Halsall 1). The Reasons of Chinese Immigrated to the United States Free Essays

The Reasons of Chinese immigrated to the United States Introduction In China, since the reform and opening-up, there have been two waves of immigration in the last century late 70s and early 90s. With the advent of a new century, China’s economy has come into the phase of rapid development and its informatization construction has been developed at a high speed. Surprisingly, at that time, there is growing the third emigration which is a larger scale one. We will write a custom essay sample on The Reasons of Chinese Immigrated to the United States or any similar topic only for you Order Now Among these immigrants, the professional elite and the proportion of affluent people increases year by year. Why do so many Chinese immigrate to US while China is growing fast and full of opportunities? That’s a very good question which might have thousands of answers from the Chinese immigrants. The present study surveys Chinese immigrants’ reasons and attitudes toward immigrate to the United States. Method Participates: The interviews were requested to be completed by Chinese people I have met in the Chinese school in Edison and New Brunswick, people work in the Asian Cultural Center of NJ, and some of my friends in Montclair State University, Rutgers University and Fairleigh Dickenson University. I have totally interviewed 30 people included 5 people want to immigrate, 23 immigrants, 2 second-generation immigrants (American born Chinese). Questions: Besides the basic information about ages, incomes, the questions included: When was your first come to the United States? When did you immigrate? Is there any family member immigrated with you? Why you immigrated to the United States? Why did you choose the United States? Conclusion First, people pursue the high quality of life and the high quality of experience. In this rapidly developing society, the pursuit of a high quality of life has become a demand of modern people. As economy is developing fast, people’s living conditions have greatly improved. When people get a promotion, they want to move into bigger house and higher living conditions. Human desires are not always fulfilled. People are alive and never satisfied with the present condition. Especially, some successful young people prefer to choose one new life in order to pursue the high-quality experience. They want to challenge themselves in a totally different situation. Life isn’t about finding yourself, Life is about creating yourself! † said Lichun Zhang, 46. She is a reporter of one of the biggest Chinese newspaper in the USA. When she was in China, she was a manger of one famous company of Shanghai. For her dream, she left her native place. For this dream, she abandoned a lot such as her prestigious job and her comfortable life. Second, the natural environment in United States is better than in China. During the rapid development of the global economy, natural resource encounters the over-limited exploitation that destroys the environmental balance. Some heavy industry cities have been serious polluted. Industrialization quickly affected local water and air quality around factories. We can see the big gap between the air quality in China and in some Western country such as the United State. A Chinese student studies in the Fairleigh Dickson University, Zerong Ding said that he likes this new life. He seems to live and study in a big forest park. On the contrary, there are varied and numerous of tall buildings around us. More and more buildings were constructed, less and less green space were damaged. The green space has a great function on adjusting and meliorating the urban climate system and on purifying the urban atmosphere. There are apparent differences in forest fragmentation and disturbance patterns between China and the USA in the current analysis. The possible underlying reasons responsible include differences in political systems, institutions, economy, and so on. (Li, Mao, Zhou, Vogelmann, Zhu,2010) Lawmaking in China did not take ecological, economic and societal benefits of forests into account in the past, which led to an inadequate protection of natural forests. In particular, forest fragmentation issues were not involved in the processes of legislation. To date, a well-defined tenure or ownership has not been available for those collective forests in southern China, and an overloaded forest-related taxation still exists for forest farmers. This has heavily undermined the afforestation initiatives available to forest farmers (Zhang, 2008). In contrast, the USA has pushed many favorable policies, including an adoption of taxation incentive packages to encourage citizens to manage forests. A comprehensive system of laws related to forest management has dramatically advanced forest management levels and led to an overall forest inventory regularly. Beside governmental supports, various NGO’s pay much attention to forest fragmentation issues when management plans are being developed. (Li, Mao, Zhou, Vogelmann, Zhu,2010) In contrast, USA attaches greater importance to the preservation of natural forests (FAO, 2006). More importantly, the USA tends to pay more attention to technical innovations, as well as efficient and sustainable forestry practices, to help minimize anthropogenic disturbances to forests.Currently, there are significant gaps in forestry technologies and administrative philosophy and capabilities between China and the USA, which are key contributors to different types and levels of forest fragmentation(Li, Mao, Zhou, Vogelmann, Zhu,2010). Although the hardware environment in some big cities of China is good, sometimes even better than American, the forest management levels and the relatively policies must be improved. Third, the rhythm of life in China has become faster and faster, people can easily feel pressure and lost their happiness. China is densely populated. As for China, a developing country with large population, it is hard to solve the problem of employment. Obtaining employment of university students is a vital and key problem in the development of higher education. More and more graduates are facing a serious problem of obtain employment. In today’s highly competitive market environment, working pressure and heated competition are growing day by day. No one wants to be left behind in the competition. Everyone is confronted with more and more fierce competitions. As everybody is pressed for time, the rhythm of life is more anxious. The level of people’s happiness dropped apparently.Today, when people visit China’s major cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai or Chongqing, people can easily feel the rhythm of life much faster than America. Everything happens in a fast forward mode. People feel the vibrancy, and people feel the pressure, too(Lifestyle – China vs. North America). Starting from late 90’s, China pushed forward its reform in its residential housing system, privatizing residential houses by encouraging people to buy houses with governmental subsidiary. Only since then, China’s real estate market tool off (There was no houses or apartments you can buy before the reform.Everyone lives in the state owned apartments). In merely 10 years, accompanying the fast growing economy, the housing prices in major cities such as Beijing and Shanghai have skyrocketed over 10 folds. However, the affordability went straight down(Lifestyle – China vs. North America). For instance, (Bridge to China, 2010) the current average housing price in Shanghai is about RMB10,000 per square meter, which means a 100 square meter (930 sqft) apartment would cost RMB1 million. (Note: Because China’s large cities are heavily populated, e. g. 0 million in Shanghai alone, few people can afford living in a house, or â€Å"villa† in Chinese term, which costs millions in US or Canadian dollars. Most people live in high-rise condo apartments). The average annual personal income, however, is only RMB40,000. That means a double income family need 12. 5 years income to pay off their home without spending a dime on food or entertainment. Here in North America, we only need 4 to 5 years. Simply put, in China the young people there just cannot afford to be not aggressive, no matter at work, in business or study. Fourth, the parents want their children can received better education.Shushu Ye, a teacher of Chinese school in Edison said that she has immigrated for her eight-year-old son, Boyang. She wants her son can received advanced skills and techniques in this developed big country. On the other hand, the different between Chinese education system and American is significant. Hailin Wang is the principal of Chinese school in New Brunswick used â€Å"Fear of public speaking†, the most common phobia that people have, to explain these two different systems. For example, strictness is the well-known brand of education in China. In class, students take notes while listening to the lecture. Most teaching still emphasizes direct instruction and passive learning. Gradually, students become silence and lost our own views in class. We have not chance to talk in public. On the contrary, the interactive learning in the American classroom offers the opportunities to exploit the logical thinking and creativity. American students are used to voice their thought in public. We need to learn from them and practise more in order to supply our deficiency. Fifth, it is convenient for travellers, visitors or the business men do the commercial intercourse between China and America. People have to go through a lot of red tape to get the visa. However, if people become American citizen, they can enjoy the visa exempt. It is convenient for the business man to do the commercial intercourse. For the past ten years, Huang Ye has done a lot of trade with American company. Generally, she needs to travel from China to America three times per month. She has a big company to sell china and Zisha teapot. Zisha teapot of Yixing, is a wonderful work of the traditional Chinese arts with a long history. Ye told me that she loves her job because she found that many American people love these Chinese crafts very much. References Mingshi Li, Lijun Mao, Chunguo Zhou, James E. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Free-Samples for Students

Question: Write a Personal response to Stephen Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Answer: Introduction The essay will discuss in detail about my personal response and learning from the book called The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal change. The book is written by Stephen Covey and he has discussed the proven practices in order to bring some transformation through this best selling work in the form of book. This is considered as one of those work consisting facts of life that has transformed the life of the people forever. The book presents a holistic approach which is integrated and focused on principles in order to solver personal as well as professional issues (Covey, 2008). The books is primarily based on different principles and these principles gives a simple yet trusted solution to easily adapt good changes in life along with the right kind of wisdom and complete power to take some important benefits of the options that actually creates some good changes. Discussion Following are the seven habits discussed in detail and by response to those habits: - It is very crucial to be more proactive in life. The truth is the people will not achieve anything simply sitting at home and planning. For that one need to get out and be more active in deciding what one want to accomplish in life and also figuring out a proper game plan of how one is going to get there (Buse, and Harmer, 2007). It is also important to start with the end in mindset. If an individual want to become something in life, than the first step will be to find out about skills, knowledge as well as experiences needed for the same. After achieving that information or data, one can easily compare it with the present set of knowledge, experiences and skills. Accordingly one can decide the required gaps. When the gaps can be figured out easily, it become important to gain some vital information, skills and experienced on the same and people also need it to become more qualified for the position (Buse, and Harmer, 2007). Therefore, it is crucial to start with the end and decide all the steps beforehand. First things first should be the mantra of life. In daily lives, it is important to make a list of things quickly as most important thing one need to achieve at work. I call them my blue chip list since these are some important items that I usually prioritize with highest level of requirement. This further will force me as a person to be more attentive on finishing the crucial piece of work first and then start to understand that something are trivial by nature and they can be put on one side or can even be forgotten (Buse, and Harmer, 2007). Win/win situations are very important. It is always crucial to understand that it is sometimes amazing that when this approach is based on terms of a win/win solution which is better and a more creative answer was normally found. It is important to first understand the situation than explaining yourself. The habit is specifically crucial for people on managerial position. As a manager answers to a situation it is first important for him to understand all the perspectives of the situation. After understanding it, it is important to decide the best possible answers however that can only take place after the situation is completely understood (Covey, 2014). Synergy is crucial as it make us understand that the overall sum is much greater than the small parts. The habit of synergy is based on always important to choose to work as a team that is diverse by nature and will function well together. There are many kinds of background as well as experiences that come from diverse and often based on creative ideas when people work with one another. There is also a difference based on creativity and is often based on the present world of competition (Covey, 2014). The last habit is one of the most influential one and the learning is that if I want move ahead in my career it is important to take some time out to upgrade the knowledge and learn new skills in the areas whenever required. It is also very important to understand that the element of character ethics are initial featured while other like personality ethics become secondary elements for focus. The secondary traits may also assist me to understand and play the game in order to success in some particular situations to accomplish long term success. When the character is based on what is visible in long run associations (Andriole, 2007). The issue with depending on the personality based ethics; the fundamental paradigm for the same is right and sometimes changes the external attitude which is not very impactful. The world is seen on the basis of different perspective which can also make the dramatic impact on the thing I perceive important. There are number of experiments associated with it that are conducted in two parts that are shown to two different people. The first group is shown a drawing of the young and beautiful woman and the other is shown an old woman. The first round of exposure both groups are given an abstract drawing and this specific drawing consists of the components of young and old women. So the first group who saw first drawing saw the beautiful woman in the abstract drawing and the second group saw the old woman in the abstract drawing (Andriole, 2007). The important point is that people see thing not as what they think they are but what society condition them to see. It is very crucial to under stand the significance of the past conditioning and me as an individual has experienced a shift in the way I use to see the things. In order to make crucial changes in lives of people, it is important to work on the foundation level paradigms which help in perceiving the world. Then there is character based ethics which is based on the principle of that existing in every human being. There are some important examples based on the principle of fairness, integrity, honesty, quality of life, potential and overall development. These principles are completely opposite with the practices that are specific in situations and on the other hand, these principles have a universal application for the same (Andriole, 2007). The requirement to have a right balance that exist between the production as well as production capacities actually applies on the financial, physical as well as human based assets. For instance, when in a company an individual is in charge of a specific machine and it many increase the overall production of the machine just by postponing the present scheduled level maintenance. But the rise in rapid results comes out to be at the expense of coming production in future because more maintenance means more performance on the machines at the later stage. The individual in question can further take the mess and can also be blamed for the inevitable rise in maintenance expenses and downtime (Nawrot and Doucet, 2014). Consumer loyalty here is also an important point since it becomes an asset to which the overall production and production based capacity can be applied. A restaurant can have a reputation for serving a good amount of food however, the person in question may later determine to cut the overall costs and lower the quality of the food. It is obvious that the profits will rise immediately however, the reputation of the place will later be tarnished with the trust of the consumers that are lost and the overall level of profits is declined. Significant or important Quadrant I Pressing issues Crisis Driven on deadlines Projects or assignments Quadrant II PC activities Prevention Association building Identifying new options Planning as well as recreation Not so Important Quadrant III Some calls causes interruptions Some mail or reports Meetings Pressing matters Popular functions Quadrant IV Trivia or busy schedule Mail Phone calls Time waste elements Pleasant work Another concept is related to simple method associated with the quadrants and how to later characterize the concept of time in effective manner. Here it is important to understand that people who are able to manage the lives because of the overall crisis actually spend most of their time in first phase or quadrant and the remaining ten percent in fourth phase of quadrant with little attention on pat associated to II and III (Hennecke et al., 2014). There are many other people that also spend a lot of time in third quadrant just by thinking that are in first phase. When the people lead their life as being a part of third and fourth Quadrant specifically actually lead lives as an irresponsible citizen (Grant, 2016). Rise in the gap between response and stimulus are based on the concept of more the space more one can develop between the response and stimulus and the more people can actually choose to be more impactful in responses since we as people are in reaction mode constantly (Redmond and Dolan, 2016). By properly developing a specific space, people can actually engage more and more in thinking process which is rational by nature and it is also able to test and assess different kind of options along with focus on the final outcomes (Smith et al., 2013). Conclusion The book is nothing but the inside out principle which is centered on the approach and different characters at the same time. The approach of inside out is based on the changes or transformation which initiates within first. There are so many people, where the approach shows a slow paradigm movement from the personality ethics to character based ethics (Smith et al., 2013). Reference Andriole, S.J., 2007. Nutrition and food science experts enjoy helping people lead healthier lives through a balanced diet. Nutrition and food science degrees focus on the chemical and biological components of our food and the ways in which these ingredients affect our health. Nutritionists and dietitians also study the social impacts of the foods we eat, including how they affect our economy, psychology, and culture. Most graduates of nutrition science programs become nutritionists or dietitians. Both careers involve working closely with individuals or communities to plan and supervise the preparation of healthy meals, whether in the context of an individual practice or a large institution such as a school or hospital. Dieticians and nutritionists are also concerned with education and awareness. Teaching their patients how their diets affect their health and well-being is a large part of the job. If the patient understands that her current diet is placing her at risk, she is more likely to cooperate in the diet's modification. Nutritionists can also specialize in a particular discipline within their field. Dietitians often specialize in treating children or patients with kidney problems, critical illnesses or diabetes. Others supervise overweight patients or those with eating disorders. Some clinical nutritionists and dietitians make a career out of managing the food service departments of large institutions, such as hospitals, nursing care facilities, schools, or correctional facilities. These specialists must plan healthy, well-balanced meals for the correct number of individuals, often on a strict budget. Food scientists analyze food, ingredients, and what causes it to break down or spoil. They are concerned with the safe preservation and processing of food as well as its nutritional value. They can help companies keep tabs on food sanitation, quality control, storage, and marketing. Due to an increased awareness in recent years of how food directly affects our health, there is a greater demand for professionals trained in nutrition and food science. The general public has begun to realize just how important it is to eat well-balanced meals. This means that the opportunities for a career in nutrition are at an all-time high. Being a nutritionist, dietitian, or food scientist is about more than just telling people what to eat. There are a wide variety of careers in this field. From advertising to research, if you are interested in health and nutrition, there is a job for you in the vast field of nutrition and food science APPLE TRIFLE WITH MASCARPONE CREAM GINGER PARKIN CAKE CHRISTMAS CUPCAKES MINI ITALIAN PANETTONE CAKES CHOCOLATE CHESTNUT CAKE BLUEBERRY CRUMBLE CAKE HOT CHOCOLATE GALETTES CHRISTMAS YULE LOG GLUTEN FREE FLOURLESS CHOCOLATE CAKE CAPPUCCINO CAKE WITH TOASTED NUTS-https://www.finedininglovers.com/ I made instant Jell-O for my desert. Power of one essay Essays

Power of one essay Essays Power of one essay Essay Power of one essay Essay Power of one essay BY addenda In the film, The Power of One directed by John Pavilions in 1992, many difficulties are faced by individuals resisting conformity. Pavilions uses many techniques to show how these unfortunate individuals deal with their difficulties. Racism is one of the mall difficulties faced by the individuals when resisting conformity. This Is evident when PC is in boarding school. PC is constantly bullied being the only English boy in the school. Pas voice over during his first lesson explains how the Afrikaners tried to overthrow the English government UT the English army were too strong, they locked the women and children In concentration camps where many died As the only English boy In the school, I took the blame for all those deaths. This use of voice over gives the audience information on why he was being bullied. While In the same lesson the camera pans across all the students to show all the boys, the camera stops at PC and Happy Burble who Is the bully. Wh ile the camera zooms Into a close up shot Happy Spits on PC. The close up shot depicts the look of disgust on the bullys face and how PC accepts being spat on because he Is too small as an Individual In a conformed group of Afrikaners. Racism is also shown as a main difficulty in the jail. This is evident when Gill Pieta, PC and Doc are talking. The sergeant comes from behind and hits Gill Pieta because the sergeant thinks Gill Pieta is up to something. When the sergeant hits Gill Pieta a sound effect of hit is used. This is used to make the hit sound more painful. Also a low angle shot is used on the sergeant to show his dominance and superiority and a high angle shot on Gill Pieta to show his inferiority. People with authority will enforce conformity upon the individual. This is greatly evident when the sergeant calls Gill Pieta a sit eater the sergeant puts manure on his shoe, forcing Gill Pieta to eat it. Shallow focus is used to show Gill Pieta who is in focus and PC and Doc in the background, out of focus. This shows the sergeant can make the sit eaters do whatever he wants because he has authority. The use of hallow focus allows us to see how emotional PC and doc are and how they are unable to assist Gill Pieta through his struggles as an individual. Maria is also forced to conform because of her fathers authority. While eating dinner Maria tells her father that she believes what he is doing to the black South Africans shouldnt apply to anyone. This makes her father furious; he slaps her across the face. A sound effect off slap is used when he does so. Deep focus is used to show them at the dinner table when Maria is told she is grounded by her father because she was coming an individual. The deep focus shows the father out of focus while disciplining Maria who is in focus. As you can see the power of one conveys all of these struggles that individuals face when resisting conformity. Koran as a Message of Peace Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1

Koran as a Message of Peace - Essay Example Not only this that the diction and mythology narrated in these Scriptures are very similar to one another, but also they also lay stress upon one and the same teachings. Since it gives glad tidings to the humans in the afterlife on performing good,  escaping evil, and complying with the commands of Almighty Allah and his last Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (peace and blessings of Almighty Allah be upon him) during their stay in this world. Moreover, its teachings vehemently forbid its followers from hurting, harming and killing anyone, either Muslim or non-Muslim altogether, without any just reason. Similarly, it also provides complete shelter and protection to the non-believers even, which do not have any nefarious designs to harm the Muslims or the cause of Islam, as Chapter 65 Verse 2 of the Scripture clearly states: And whosoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (of every difficulty). It is, therefore, Koran is regarded as the message of pea ce. Koran and Bible maintain several issues and beliefs in common. For instance, Leviticus 19: 1-33 of the Hebrew Bible manifestly commands its followers (as well as all humans at large) to worship One God, respect the parents, observe honesty, integrity, chastity and avoid fornication, theft, cheating, adultery, homosexuality and disobedience of God. Almost the same teachings have been stressed in Chapter 17 of the Holy Koran (i.e. Children of Israel), where its verses from 41 to 52 glorify the attributes and blessings of Almighty Allah upon all the creatures, which in return say His hymns and praises subsequently.

Inclusion and the Inclusive Learning Environment Essay

Inclusion and the Inclusive Learning Environment - Essay Example In differentiation, a trainer tailors the instructions as per the needs of the learners. â€Å"Whether teachers differentiate content, process, products, or the learning environment, the use of ongoing assessment and flexible grouping makes this a successful approach to instruction† (Tomlinson, 2013). An inclusive learning environment is created to ensure equal access to all tools, aids, and opportunities for all students. There are a number of ways in which this can be achieved in a health and beauty salon. The first and the foremost aspect of an inclusive learning environment is to ensure that all learners are physically capable of experiencing the same quality of training. In a health and beauty salon, like any other class, this can be achieved by making learners with spectacles occupy the front seats and those with the stronger eye-sights occupy the middle and the rear seats. Taller learners should be seated at the rear so that there is no hindrance in the way of vision fr om the learner to the white board. After carefully designing the seating plan considering the physical traits of the learners, the teacher needs to design the teaching strategies that promise maximal inclusion on the part of the learners. For example, group projects containing members with different levels of capabilities and different skills is a way of promoting inclusive learning. When a certain number of students work upon the same project, each occupying a specific role and using a specific skill, the learning is not merely limited to the very skill, but every learner also develops a comprehensive understanding of the skills of other members of the group. When the project is complete, a significant development in the skills of the learners in different areas is achieved. Another aspect of inclusive learning is discipline. In the contemporary age, classrooms have become increasingly multicultural with respect to learners. People from different countries join the health and beaut y salons and take classes to enhance their skills. To provide the learners with a safe environment in which their potential to maximize their learning is optimized, it is imperative that the teacher establishes rules, principles, or compiles a code of ethics in which objectionable behaviors are clearly depicted and learners are strictly instructed to deter from displaying them in the class. In case of lack of compliance, disciplinary action can be executed. Such objectionable behaviors include but are not limited to use of racist remarks, discriminatory remarks or practices on the basis of gender, race, or culture, and bullying. Resources to meet the need of learners in inclusive learning should be utilized from within the classroom or with due consultation with the concerned authorities. There are numerous ways in which learners can be engaged and motivated in an inclusive environment. For example, when formulating the seating plan to ensure that all learners have full vision of th e whiteboard and the stage, the trainer asks the learners to provide them with information about their individualistic physical traits like eye-sight and height. Students find such activities interesting and realize that these activities are meant to develop such a seating plan where everybody would be able to see clearly. Providing students with constructive feedback is another

Fractional Distillation Process To Separate Organic Liquids

Fractional Distillation Process To Separate Organic Liquids Distillation is a very useful method of purifiying liquids. Simple distillation is used when a pure solvent is required to be obtained from the solution. This is usually water. On the other hand, fractional distilation is basically used for the separation of a mixture of two miscible organic liquids having different boiling points. A common example of two liquids that mix with each other are ethanol and water. Another example is petrol and paraffin. In this experiment, a mixture of acetone and toluene was provided. Basically, the liquid mixture was boiled to evaporate the liquid that had the lowest boiling point, referred to as the first fraction. The vapour passed up through a fractionating column, which is not used in a simple distillation. As the mixture vaopur passed up the fractionating column, it continually condensed and evaporated. This caused it to become increasingly richer in the liquid with the lowest boiling point until the vapour that reached the top consisted almost entirely of the component with the lowest boiling point. The vapour is then cooled in the condenser and so it condensed back to a liquid, which was collected, hence referred to as the distillate. When almost all the liquid with the lowest boiling point was distilled over, the temperature rised rapidly showing that a mixture of both liquids was distilling over. This should be collected in a separate container and discarded. Once the temperature reached the boiling point of the second liquid, the liquid was then distilled into another container. This basically explained the process of fractional distillation. However, there is a theory behind all this, because the process of distillation should be related in reference to an ideal liquid mixture where one is more volatile than the other. Regarding the mixture of acetone/toluene provided in this experiment, ideal behaviour was assumed and once the process was carried out, the more volatile liquid was found by finding the boiling point of each component. It was noted that the more volatile liquid was acetone since this had a lower boiling point. This was discussed further in relation to boiling point-composition graphs. 2. Method 2.1 Chemicals used Reagent: Grade: Manufacturer: Acetone GPR BDH Toluene GPR Merck 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine GPR Riedel de Haem Sodium hydroxide GPR Tinstar Iodine GPR BDH Dioxane GPR Aldrich A mixture of acteone (BDH, GPR) and toluene (Merck, GPR). 2.2 Apparatus Fractionating column, thermometer, 100 mL round bottomed flask as the distillation pot, glass beads, anti-bumping granules, cotton wool, tight clip, Leibig condenser with rubber tubings, heating mantle, connecting side-arms as part of the fractional distillation setup, retort stand with clamp, water supply, 10 mL and 100 mL measuring cylinders, electronic balance, test-tubes, distilled water. 2.3 Procedure Part a) The separation of the acetone/toluene mixture and the measurement of the boiling points of each. The apparatus for fractional distillation was set-up appropriately using a 100 mL round-bottomed flask, the fractionating column provided, insulated well with cotton wool. 50 mL of the acetone/toluene mixture was placed in the 100 mL round-bottomed flask. This was measured using a measuring cylinder. A few boiling chips or anti-bumping granules, which were small irregularly pieces of material, were added to the round-bottomed flask in order to allow prolonged boiling. The apparatus was clamped accordingly from the neck of the round-bottomed flask and checked to be balanced and well set-up before the heating mantle was switched on. Then round-bottomed flask was heated slowly using a heating mantle, until the reading on the thermometer reached a steady state and drops were observed to condense out of the Leibig condenser. This was the boiling point of the first fraction. This steady state temperature was recorded and the distillate was collected in a 100 mL measuring cylinder. The distillation was allowed to proceed until no more liquid got out of the condenser into the measuring cylinder. Then the volume of the first fraction was recorded. When all of the first fraction was distilled out, the temperature at the top of the column was observed to increase and then reached a second steady state, which was the boiling point of the second fraction. Drops of the second fraction were observed to start to condense out of the Leibig condenser. This steady state temperature which was the boiling point of the second fraction, was recorded. The second distillate was collected in a clean measuring cylinder and then its volume was recorded. Part b) The usage of two different tests for the identification of the liquid distillate having a carbonyl group. (acetone) 2,4-DNPH test was first carried out. 2-3 drops of the liquid to be tested were added to 3 mL of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine, and shaken. Any observations and inferences were recorded. The iodofrom test was then carried out. 4 micro drops of the liquid to be tested were dissolved in 2 mL distilled water, in a test-tube. The drops were added carefully using a pipette. 2 mL of 10 % sodium hydroxide were then added together with 2 mL of iodine solution, which were added slowly by drops. The substance was insoluble in water and therefore 2 mL dioxane were added. This was done so that the substance dissolved. Any observations and inferences were then recorded. Each test was carried out twice, for each distillate. Diagram: The set-up apparatus for Fractional Distillation. Precautions It was ensured that the thermometre was positioned accordingly at the mouth opening of the Leibig condenser, where it indicated which fraction was being evaporated by noting the temperature readings. The thermometer position was very important because if the thermometer bulb was to be placed too high, the vapours would reach it before they pass into the side-arm to be collected, and the observed boiling point would be lower than it should be. If the thermometer bulb was to be placed too low, vapours of impurities might reach it, and a high reading for the boiling point range would be given. It was ensured that the fractionating column was filled and packed with glass beads, for maximum possible surface area for vapour to condense on. It was ensured that a joint clip was used and attached between the end of the condenser and the side arm so that there was complete attachment of the setup together and any spillage of the liquid distillate was prevented, but allowed to drop only from the side arm tube, where the vent was present. It was ensured that the Leibig condenser provided was set-up accordingly with opening below meant for water to be pumped in while the opening at the top meant for water to be pumped out, and vice-versa. Although water pressure transfers from a higher to a lower height, if the condenser had to be the other way round the liquid might not be cooled completely as it would only condense the top portion of the condenser. Therefore if the rest of the part of the Leibig condenser was not cooled, the liquid would might evaporate into gas again at the bottom part of the condenser. This explained the importance of correct set-up. It was ensured that as much of the second fraction as possible was collected, however at the same time care was taken so as not to allow the distillation pot, i.e. the 100 mL round-bottomed flask, to boil dry otherwise the residues might ignite or expode. It was ensured that anti-bumping granules were used. These were placed in the 100 mL round-bottomed flask with the 50 mL of the acetone/toluene mixture. The granules were important since they allowed prolonged, smoother boiling without bumping and continuous even formation and release of vapour bubbles were observed. It was ensured that cotton wool was used so that the whole fractionating column was completely wrapped and covered for insulation or lagging. This was important so that the apparatus remained as warm as possible and excessive cooling was avoided, but occurred very slowly. It was ensured that parallax errors were avoided as much as possible by looking normally to the scale of the measuring cylinder were when taking readings of the volumes of liquids, or when taking temperature readings from the thermometre. For safety measures, it was ensured that care was taken when distilling organic solvents in order to avoid explosions and fires. Hence, it was ensured that the vapour did not come into contact with flames, sources of sparks or very hot surfaces such as hot plates. It was ensured that the apparatus was not completely sealed. A vent in the system was required so as to prevent pressure build up in the system as heating was carried out. Otherwise the apparatus would simply blow apart. Therefore, for safey measures, it was ensured that heating in a closed system was avoided. 3. Results Volume of acetone and toluene mixture used was: 50.0 mL Observations Inferences from the 2,4-DNPH test A red-orange precipitate was formed. This positive result means that a carbonyl group, was present in the formula of the substance. No precipitate was formed. The substance contained no carbonyl group, in its formula, hence a negative result was obtained. Observations Inferences from the Iodoform test A pale yellow precipitate was formed. This means that the substance contains a in its formula, hence it gave a positive iodoform with an antiseptic smell. No precipitate was formed. No group was present in the formula of the substance, hence a negative result was obtained. Suspected Identity of Fraction 4. Discussion: At any given temperature a pure liquid in a close container will establish an equilibrium with its vapour: liquidvapour The equilibrium vapour pressure above the liquid will depend upon the temperature. Considering mixing two liquids in different proportions, Raoults Law states that for an ideal mixture at a fixed temperature, the vapour pressure of each component is proportional to its mole fraction. This means that the graph of the vapour pressure of each component against its mole fraction will be a straight line passing through the origin. Considering the case of two volatile liquids, as in this experiment, each of which contributes to the total vapour pressure, by Daltons Law of partial pressures it is known that the total vapour pressure of the mixture is the sum of that of the components and this will also give a straight line when plotted against molar composition. Therefore it could be said that it is more convenient to plot boiling point of the mixture against molar composition. The boiling point of a liquid is the temperature as which its vapour pressure reaches the external atmospheric pressure. Since the less volatile component will have the highest boiling point, being toluene in this case, the vapour pressure curves in figure 1 lead to boiling point-composition graph as shown in figure 2. Two curves were drawn in this diagram since the liquid mixture and the vapour in equilibrium with it do not have the same composition. The vapour will always contain a higher proportion of the more volatile (lower boiling point) component. This difference in composition between the liquid and vapour phases in equilibrium enables such a liiquid mixture to be separated by disitllation. To separate a liquid mixture which obeys Raoults Law, one must repeatedly distill, i.e. boil the liquid and condense the vapour. This is fractional distillation, and rather than carrying out each stage separately, it is convenient to use a fractionating column designed to allow many such steps to occur simultaneously. Fractional distillation is widely used in industrial chemistry for separating mixtures of miscible liquids which boil at different temperatures. For example pure oxygen, nitrogen and noble gases may be obtained from liquid air by fractional distillation. Another example is the hydrocarbons in crude oil which can be separated into useful fractions. In order to discuss the results obtained, one should say that these were clearly explained in the table of results tabulated. It was observed that the boiling points measured were very reliable since these were checked using the organic compounds database website, maintanied by Colby College and the components of the mixture provided i.e acetone and toluene were listed. One should say that there were many readings, as can be observed from the table of results, where the temperature remained constant as more drops of distillate were collected. This confirmed the boiling point of the organic liquid. Some modifications could be made for the procedure of the fractional distillation process. For instance, rather than using a fractionating column packed with glass beads to give the maximum possible surface area for vapour to condense on, a fractionating column with spikes of glass sticking out from the sides could be used, and this would serve the same purpose. Sources of error Once the temperature on the thermometre was observed to rise rapidly, this meant that a mixture of both organic liquids were distilling over. Hence, these few drops should have been collected in a separate container and discarded since they did not consist of an individual liquid. However, this was not done. Hence the volume of the first fraction (acetone) collected was slightly greater than it was supposed to be and was not of the pure organic liquid but had some drops of the second fraction (toluene) in it. this is the container was replaced once the temperature was raised. The thermometer was repeatedly being moved up and down when the temperature readings were taken. This is because some of the scale was hidden by the set-up itself. This movement of the thermometre might affected the results slightly because the boiling temperature range obtained might varied a bit due to this action. 5. Conclusion: It was concluded that fractional distillation was carried out and therefore separation of two organic liquids acetone/toluene mixture occurred. It was also concluded that the boiling point of each component was found and tests on each liquid component, once distillated and separated, were carried out in order to prove the identity of the component.

The Writing Style of The Catcher in the Rye Essay -- essays research p

Jerome David Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye is a truly unique novel in terms of writing style. The story is told in a second person narrative style by a character named Holden Caulfield, and is written loosely in a fashion known as 'stream of consciousness writing'. The stream of consciousness style of writing is that in which the writing directly follows the character's thought process in either an interior monologue or through the character's reactions to external occurrences. Stream of consciousness writing is not typically used in books due to its clearly-defined limits and its extreme demand for a talented and devoted author. In order for the writing to be effective, the story must revolve around only one character, and that character must be developed extensively as a believable person through realistic thoughts and actions. The following of Holden's stream of consciousness is the reason that many seemingly unnecessary facts find their way into Salinger's writing. They are a direct result of Holden's roaming teenage mind. Many other works of literature have used the stream of consciousness writing style, so this alone does not make Salinger's work unique. What makes The Catcher in the Rye a unique literary work is Salinger's combination o f stream of consciousness along with several other literary contrivances. One of these contrivances in particular is the way Holden?s thoughts are set up in a specific order so that one ostensibly random tangent relates, contrasts, or plainly contradicts another. A good example of one of Salinger?s very intelligent and slightly vague contrasts can be seen distinctly when Holden places his account of children directly beside his account of actors, showing the difference between the two.... ...er. All-in all, Salinger?s writing style is one of unique, masterminded inventiveness. Some may argue that Salinger has done nothing unique or inventive, but he has combined so many various and beautifully executed writing styles and devices of literature that no one on earth could argue against the fact that J.D. Salinger has masterminded a classic novel that has already lasted over sixty years as a great and controversial story. The examples of relationships, society, and life itself that Salinger has created in The Catcher in the Rye are so exquisite and so timeless that they have already reserved the novel a place in history as one of the greatest stories of all time. As simple and easily understood as the story is, the morals behind the plot and the subtle symbolism scattered all throughout Holden?s tale have turned the teenager?s journey into an epic excursion.
